Being Good Stewards of Our Gifts and Talents

by Aug 22, 2017Missions

God has been speaking to me lately about my neglected gifts and talents. I am talking about things He has specifically asked me to do with the natural gifts He has given me, which I have procrastinated in carrying out.

The Bible tells us that all of us have been given gifts and talents and that we are to be good stewards of these things in order to advance His Kingdom and bless others. In doing so, we too are naturally blessed.

1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

God has specifically asked me to start using my free time more productively by applying time to these specific things He has called me to do. Many that know me might ask, “What free time?!?” Haha….I mean I do have 18-month-old twin babies, 3 grown up daughters, 2 grandchildren and I also work from home and take care of my household. Most of us can give a comparable list of things that take up our time. However, what about the time we spend on Facebook or watching TV, etc?

I have made a firm decision to answer God’s call in this and start using any free time that I may have more wisely. That is not to say I will never watch TV or log on to Facebook, but it is good to limit these things and at least be sure to spend more time with God and doing what He has called us to do.

Remember the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. This passage teaches us that it’s not the amount of gifts or talents we are given, but how we utilize those talents that is important.

Has God called you to write a book you have not yet written? Has He given you a musical gift you have not been using? Has He called you to be a missionary and you have not yet gone?

I do not say these things out of judgement. I literally chose this topic because it is what God is dealing with me about personally. I will be very vulnerable with you all. I had a book published in 2010 and since then God has given me two more specific books and a screenplay to write and I have not started any of them! But it’s never too late! I have made a firm decision to do better and use my free time more wisely.  Will you?

Romans 12:6-8

“In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”
