As a senior citizen, I have a lot to say about what it means to get “older.” Now older is a relative term. It depends on your age how you think about “older.” I am 79 and think middle age is getting higher and higher all of the time. If middle age is 40 then that means that next year would be my last year on earth to serve the Lord. But, for me, I think I want to expand that to age 60 being middle age. If you are one of those who is 65, 70, 75, or 80 and above, then you know what I mean.
The Western society has put us in bondage by their stereotypes and their opinions. They have relegated us to the back burners many times. Even in the church, they seem to gravitate to the younger generations. And when we get to a certain age and do not seem to function as well as before, we are put in nursing homes. I want to say here that there is a move and a protest from the heavens that shouts to all who will hear that “You are losing some of your best potentials!” There is nothing that I can find in my Bible that says when we get to a certain age, we are useless to the lord, the church, and to society. In fact, Moses did not even start until he was 80 and Abraham did not have the promised child until after 100 years of age!
To you seniors who are reading this, I want to encourage you to resurrect your dreams, to let yourself do the things that you always dreamed of doing, but never had the time, to uncover some of those long ago forgotten promises that the Lord promised to you somewhere in your past life. We have capitulated to a mindset that society and people around us have cast upon us. I want to encourage you of all ages to allow the seniors to live and move and have their being in the Lord. We (which means all of us) too often accept what the doctors say about aging. “Well, you must expect certain limitations because of your age.. After all, your hearing will go, your eyesight will go, you will not be able to walk as well, or function as well.” These are lies that I fight against because the Lord does not say that of me.
Some of the most remarkable people are in their upper 70’s and even 80’s. I think of Marilyn Hickey. She is not slowing down, but going into very dangerous places and taking the message that she has taught all of her life. I think of Kenneth and Gloria Copeland. They are still going strong and prospering in every way in their lives. If they can do it, why not I? I am inspired by Dr. Clarice Fluitt who at 78 is taking the mountain of business and being used to bring the Lord into the business mountain. I am inspired by our own Patricia King who keeps a schedule that is very demanding and bringing forth many areas of ministry in the earth today. Just lately, the Lord gave her the vision for a great harvest with cyber evangelism. It is a discipling program to bring new converts to maturity.
Do you have a mountain that is in your heart to take? Has the Lord given you a dream that you decided that you are now too old to accomplish? Do you want to write, to preach, to paint, to work with slave trafficking, to bring the homeless into homes? Do you have a burden for unwed mothers? Are you an advocate for the eradication of abortion? Are you a prayer warrior? God never withdrew His great plan for your life. Some of you can just begin again to live life to the fullest! In Haggai 2:9, it declares that our latter years will be greater than our former years. (paraphrased)
Can you look inside yourself today and ask the Lord what is holding you back from taking your mountain? You have years left that can be amazing if you allow Him to put His mindset about you into your mind. Is your thinking too small? Have you accepted what others say about you? Have you let limitations keep you from fulfilling your fullest life that God has planned for you and destined you to live? It is not too late to take your mountain. You can start anew today. God is calling all seniors to take their place. The bride of Christ is not complete without you. We need each one of you to be what the Lord called you to be.
“Arise, Shine, for your light has come. For the glory of the Lord has risen upon you and His glory will be seen upon you.” Isaiah 60:1-3
This is your finest hour. Calling all seniors!
