New Mindset

In July of 2014, I got on my face and cried out to God. I told Him that I couldn’t do life the way I had been anymore. I grew up having faith in Jesus but through a series of events in my life, I was just tired of living. I asked God to either take me to Heaven or to use my life. Since then I have been focused on continuing to renew my mind. In the Bible it says in Romans 12:2 to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”  Romans 2:2 NASB

Part of being a new creation in Christ is that we are to be conformed to the image of Christ. In order to see this happen in our lives, we are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus as stated in 2 Corinthians 10:5. In my walk with the Lord, I went through a season of turning off the tv shows and secular music and turning to sermons, the Bible, prayer, and worship. I plunged into the Word of God wanting to know Him more than I had before. I strongly desired to actually look, act and think like the new creation I am.

A couple of years later I came across a book called “Switch on Your Brain” by Dr. Caroline Leaf. It was really interesting because she wrote about literally renewing your mind and how to do it. In a way, I was already doing what I found in the book but now I had an understanding of how it worked. She shared that our brains are actually moldable based on our thoughts. This makes total sense as to why the word says we are transformed by the renewing of our minds.

So how do we renew our mind? One of the main ways is by staying in scripture. Meditating on the Word of God day and night renews our mind. In Psalms, it often speaks of meditating on the Lord and His word. Philippians 4:8 states, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”

What is more true, pure, lovely, right, honorable, excellent, and worthy of praise than God? There is nothing. So as we go through our daily lives and in our walk with the Lord remember that we are transformed by the renewing of our mind. Remember that turning our thoughts towards the Lord and His Word will transform us. Keep pressing forward in faith with your mind on Christ.
